Consortium K-Hub

SPIX industry participates in the European K-Hub project, co-financed by EIT Manufacturing and led by Whirlpool . The Marposs industrialist and the Cefriel research center are also involved.

With the financial support of EIT Manufacturing, based on the operational needs of Whirlpool and Marposs, SPIX industrie and Cefriel are developing an innovative solution allowing workers and field workers to search and access heterogeneous documentation by voice. business.

During the industry’s rapid digitization process over the past few years, a huge volume of heterogeneous documents and information has been generated. The volume of data, as well as the distribution of documents on different platforms and formats, make access to it complex for workers. This difficulty in accessing industrial knowledge leads to a drop in the performance of quality processes and maintenance operations.

The challenge of upskilling and reskilling workers in the manufacturing industry is common to 100% of companies in Europe, to support the effort to improve productivity. The solution offered by K-Hub helps with the retraining and upskilling of field workers, based on the knowledge that already exists in industrial companies. The easier it is to access company information and documents, the better company knowledge is shared and used. K-Hub means Knowledge Hub for the industry!

Press release: K-Hub, an EIT Manufacturing project

Toulouse – France, Milano – Italia – March 29, 2022

With the financial support of EIT Manufacturing, based on the operational needs of Whirlpool and Marposs, SPIX industry and Cefriel are developing an innovative solution allowing workers and field operators to search and access heterogeneous industrial documentation by voice. ‘business.

During the industry’s rapid digitization process of recent years, a huge volume of heterogeneous documents and information has been generated. The volume of information, as well as the distribution of documents on different platforms and formats, make access to it complex for workers and field operators. This difficulty in accessing industrial knowledge leads to a drop in the performance of quality processes and maintenance operations.

To support the effort to improve productivity, the challenge of upskilling and requalifying workers in the manufacturing industry is common to 100% of companies in Europe. The solution offered by K-Hub helps with the retraining and upskilling of field workers, based on the knowledge that already exists in industrial companies. The easier it is to access company information and documents, the better company knowledge is shared and used. K-Hub stands for K nowledge Hub for the industry!

“The industrial challenge of the project for Whirlpool is to give workers back the power to access the information they need in the right place and at the right time. It is essential for us to obtain more efficient operations in the workshop and to constantly improve the quality of the interventions of our qualified operators”, says Enrica BOSANI , R&D manufacturing and operational excellence project manager at Whirlpool Corporation (Italy).

Reducing the downtime of our machines is the key to increasing the productivity of our European factories. The K-Hub project gives us the opportunity to impact the efficiency of our maintenance process,” says Sergio GRECCO , after-sales service manager at Marposs .

The industrial end-user need is to provide shop floor operators with intelligent systems that can give them easy access to relevant documents and information that is already available in their plant’s distributed data management architecture.

“The technical challenge is to develop advanced semantic search engines, based on the meaning of information, connected to voice interfaces and installed on site in industrial companies. This lack of contextual “semantics” prevents the use of many existing off-the-shelf solutions,” says Irene CELINO , Knowledge Technologies Practice Manager at Cefriel .

With the K-Hub project, machine maintenance operators can leverage all available and relevant information by interacting with a digital voice assistant to retain as much hands-free as possible. This reduces the effort of interacting with a keyboard or touch screen during complex and demanding activities on machines in maintenance or during quality control.

“The human challenge is to understand how operators can use voice interfaces and voice assistance to search, retrieve and manipulate documents while working. The acceptability, usefulness and usability of shop floor voice technology is key to the success of the K-hub project,” declares André JOLY , managing director of SPIX industry .

The first use case studied is related to the maintenance of machines in the workshop. The aim is to reduce machine downtime and thus improve efficiency. The documentary databases will be used in the Marposs and Whirlpool Italy facilities, respectively in Bentivoglio and Biandronno. The experiments will take place from September to December 2022. The K-hub project should provide operational solutions by the fall.

The K-hub project benefits from the technical and financial support of the European organization EIT Manufacturing. The project can be followed on www.k-hub.eu
